"Sherlock" season 4 finale was not a happy ending for the BBC hit show. The Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman show ended with its lowest ever overnight UK ratings. It is not clear if the illegal posting of the Russian dubbed version has contributed or not.
BBC Worldwide is now investigating the leakage of the episode "The Final Problem". It has appeared online a day before the scheduled finale with a short promo for Channel One TV, the channel authorized to air the show in Russia. It has informed that they are seriously taking any breach of security. It has started a thorough investigation of how the leak happened as reported by BBC.
Show producer Sue Vertue appealed via her Twitter account appealing not to share the said illegal upload so as not to spoil the show. This is not the first time the BBC commercial arm has dealt with a leak. In 2014, it has nailed the people behind the Doctor Who episode scripts leaks as per THR.
Last Sunday, "Sherlock" season 4 got its lowest ratings plummeting further than the previous week's low ratings. The second to the last episode reached 6 million viewers which were considered as it's lowest. But the finale reached only 5.9 million viewers.
For UK TV audience share, the episode before the finale got the lowest with 25.6 percent compared to the 27.2 percent of the last episode.
Right after Sherlock bosses knew of the leakage, they urged the fans via the show's official Twitter account to keep the spoilers to themselves. This was done by J.K. Rowling before when she prevented the spoiling of her creation "Harry Potter: The Cursed Child."
Fans of the show are now wondering if it will be renewed again for season 5. Will "Sherlock" season 4 gets renewed for season 5 now that the viewership has declined? Stay tuned for the updates.
