Hurricane Sandy came in the U.S. on Saturday and it threatens to hit the east coast early next week. Reuters reported that the U.S. will likely be hit with high winds, torrential rains, flooding and power outages just a week before the presidential and congressional elections.
"Frankenstorm" will hit the Eastern states in the U.S. near Halloween. "As it merges with an Arctic air mass high over the eastern United States, forecast models show it will have all the ingredients to morph into a "super storm." Reported Reuters.
Reuters reported that coastal flooding is posing a major threat to New York City and some states along the U.S. East Coast on Friday declared emergencies on Friday. Officials advised residents to stock up on food, water and batteries.
With the presidential election around the corner on Nov. 6 the storm could prove to be a challenge for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.
Reuters reported that Romney had to cancel a rally that was scheduled for Sunday evening in Virginia, Beach, Virginia and Vice President Joe Biden also canceled a trip to Virginia Beach on Saturday.
Early voting could also be an issue because of Hurricane Sandy, "Ahead of the election, millions of Americans are taking advantage of early voting arrangements to cast their ballots. State officials said they had put in place contingency plans in case Sandy caused extended power outages or other problems that could disrupt voting."
Reuters reported that even New York City was considering shutting down their integral mass transit system because of issues that the storm could cause flooding or high winds.
The East Coast is now bracing itself with Sandy hitting Charleston, South Carolina late Saturday morning.
