Hurricane Sandy is likely to hit the East Coast early next week and has already caused havoc in Haiti, Cuba and The Caribbean.
The storm they are now calling "Frankenstorm" because it could hit the East Coast on Halloween is also ruining travel plans and complicating flights. Many airlines are on the look out for travel plan complications because of the looming storm heading its way over to the East Coast.
The Huffington Post reported that some airlines in the U.S. are allowing travelers to reschedule their flights back for their ticket because of Hurricane Sandy.
JetBlue, Spirit and US Airways are all airlines that are giving passengers the option of rescheduling their flights without a change fee. The Huffington Post reports that a typical change fee is about $150 and the offers are covering passengers who are flying all over, where travel plans could have been ruined, from New Hampshire to Latin America.
Other airlines are taking a close look at the storm and keeping passengers updated. The Huffington Post said that only a few flights have been canceled thus far because of the storm.
"Hurricane Sandy plowed through the Bahamas early Friday after leaving 38 people dead across the Caribbean. Forecasters say it could blend with a winter storm to produce a so-called "Frankenstorm" along the U.S. East Coast next week," said The Huffington Post.
For those flying in or out of areas that have or could be hit on the storm, checking flight statuses early is imperitive.
Dan Hofmann, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton said to Newsday, "It's going to be a very large and powerful storm" and "even if that landfall shifts 50 miles one way or other, the effects will be the same."
Hurricane Isaac was the last major storm in the U.S. that threatned flights and canceled a few hundred.
