Jon Peters, the producer of "Man of Steel" and "Superman Returns" is raking money into his bank account. But the good thing about it is that he is absolutely doing nothing. He holds the rights to the film franchise of "Superman" when he purchased it from Warner Brothers.
The money-making scheme of the producer started way back in the 1990's. Writer-producer Kevin Smith related a story about Jon Peters. He was commissioned to write the script for "Superman Reborn" later renamed as "Superman Lives." Smith continued that Peters dislike the hero's costume and does not even want the caped superhero to fly. He chose Sean Penn for the lead role.
One of his suggestions is for the main character to fight against a gigantic spider which Smith is not in favor at the time as per Comic Book. He called the giant arachnid as "Thanagarian Snare Beast." Peters revealed that he got the idea about the spider from "20,000 Leagues UnderThe Sea" by Jules Vernes.
Tim Burton was hired to direct Superman Lives but the movie got shelved and totally did not get to reach the theaters. Movie Web reported that Jon Peters narrated how he earned $80 million from the "Superman" and "Man of Steel" movies while doing nothing.
He explained, "I have 7.5 percent of the gross. Together they did [more than] a billion." Since he started the project, he gets the percentage. "Superman Returns" earned $400 million while "Man of Steel" earned a whopping $668 million. It is not clear whether he will continue earning from the succeeding movies like "Man of Steel 2."
Warner Bros. is taking into account if Peters can still get the pre-agreed percentage that he gets as the franchise owner. It can eat up the profits that the outfit can earn. Will Jon Peters continue to take his share from the earnings of the franchise?
