The world's smallest dog just may be a tiny terrier in Poland. Meysi is just 3.25 ounces and probably won't grow much bigger, which could give her the record title.
Meysi had a rough start in her young life. Anna Pohl of Jarocin, Poland, didn't think mini Meysi would survive, but Pohl did everything she could to keep her strong. She had to hand feed the puppy with a syringe throughout the whole day and night and keep it warm with her body heat.
"The worst was the first six weeks," Pohl told her local newspaper Gazeta Jarocinska. "[I got] zero sleep. I was feeding her day and night, every half hour. Sometimes I ran out of strength, had to call out of work."
Meysi was just 1.58 ounces when she was born. She was so tiny that Pohl didn't even realized it was a living creature at first.
"It's a miracle Meysi is even alive. When her mother Pusia started giving birth to her litter, I thought at first she had passed a piece of placenta and was about to throw it away when it suddenly started moving," Pohl told Gazeta Jarocinska, according to the Daily News.
Meysi eats well, but just doesn't seem to grow. Her sister from the same litter is nearly three times her size.
Now three months later, she weighs just 3.25 ounces and veterinarians believe that the petite puppy won't get much bigger. Meysi is so small, that she's tinier than a cellphone.
"I have to keep Meysi in a cage when I'm not around because I'm afraid she'll get stepped on," Pohl said.
Meysi doesn't qualify as the World's Smallest Dog just yet. She has to be at least a year and she has some stiff competition.
The current World's Smallest Dog by height is a 4-inch Chihuahua from Kentucky named Boo Boo. The smallest by length is a six-inch long Chihuahua from Florida named Heaven Sent Brady, according to the Daily News.
While Meysi might not weigh much, Guinness World Records doesn't recognize the record by weight because they don't want owners to try to starve their dog.
While Boo Boo and Brady may hold the current records, Meysi, along with two other tiny pups may take the reign. Beyonce, a tiny puppy who fit on a tablespoon when she was born is also in the running. Milly, who was born in January, was just three inches tall at three months and may also be crowned as the World's Smallest Dog when she turns one.
