Morgan Freeman got the bad news about him being dead. The Morgan Freeman death hoax is one of those hoaxes that just won't seem to die, but the legendary actor took to Facebook to update his fans to let him know that he is alive and well.
This week, the death hoax of Morgan Freeman made waves once again, making fans believe that the 75-year-old actor with the notable voice passed away. The hoax first went viral back in September when a R.I.P. Morgan Freeman Facebook page was created. The news quickly spread around social networking sites. The Facebook page has close to a million "Likes." However it was never true.
Freeman's representative released a statement, saying that the rumor was false.
"Morgan is alive and well, and joins the long list of actors who have been victimized by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet," Morgan's representative said.
The death hoax died for a few weeks but it resurrected this month as the internet once again exploded with rumors of Freeman's death.
It still isn't true, says Freeman himself.
On Tuesday evening, he took to Facebook to post a photo of himself, looking very much alive and well, and to add a bit of humor to his response to the silly death rumor.
"Like Mark Twain, I keep reading that I have died. I hope those stories are not true... But if they are, I'm happy to report that my afterlife seems identical to my life when I was alive," Freeman said.
The actor is just working on his next movie.
"I did go to Las Vegas to begin work on the film "Last Vegas. That is anything but a death sentence," Freeman added.
Hopefully a statement from the living legend himself will be able to officially put these rumors to rest. It would be a terrible thing if Freeman actually died and no one believed it, thinking it was just a rumor. Death hoaxes in general should be put to rest, but that doesn't seem likely.
It seems that 2012 is the year of the death hoax. These hoaxes often start and spread on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook and some are started through fake news sources such as Global Associated News which has a death story generator, allowing people to simply input a name and have a fake death story created.
Some other celebrities who became victims of a death hoax in recent months include actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, musician Skrillex, Rapper Lil Wayne, Actor Vince Vaughn, Tom Kenny, the voice behind SpongeBob Squarepants, country singer Taylor Swift, Comedian Bill Cosby, Alfonso Ribeiro aka Carlton from the Fresh Prince, and Bill Nye the Science Guy have all been victims of death hoaxes within the past few months. All of these celebrities are just fine.
