The latest hit to come out of the debates is President Obama's comment about 'horses and bayonets' in response to Romney during the final debate on October 22. Now Spirit Airlines has joined in on the fun by creating an ad that was inspired by the "horses and bayonets" comment.
During the final showdown between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, the two candidates sat down with moderator Bob Schieffer to discuss their stance on foreign policy issues. Several thousand people live tweeted the event, but the most tweeted about moment, with over 100,000 tweets, was about the phrase "horses and bayonets."
During the debate, Romney mentioned how the military needs more funds and that the Navy has less ships than they did in 1917. President Obama pounced on the opportunity to prove a point that with newer technology, certain military tools are no longer necessary.
"You mention the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets," Obama told Romney during the debate. "We have these things called aircraft carriers and planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines."
Social meda blew up in response to Obama's sarcastic remark and some people even created memes relating to the phrase.
To join in on the trend, Spirit Airlines sent out an email titled "Horses, Bayonets, & Savings...What?" The advertisement features the silhouette's of black and white horses holding bayonets.
The ad seems to take a stab at the candidates for throwing lies around as well as it says "We can help you save your way out of paying high fares! We won't try to divert you from the facts. We have a LOW FARE record we can run on."
As part of the special promotion, Spirit Airlines is offering $50 off a round trip with the promotion code "50OFF" by October 24.
This isn't the first time Spirit has gotten political with their ads. Just last week, after the second presidential debate, they made an ad focusing on Romney's phrase "binders full of women," which also blew up on the web.
When asked about inequality among women in the workplace, Romney discusses how his administration hired many women, but one specific phrase stoof out.
"We took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our Cabinet. I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks?' And they brought us whole binders full of women," Romney said during the debate.
Spirit Airlines took advantage of the opportunity to use the phrase and released an ad that said "We've got tons of binders full of sales." It is then followed by the phrase "Women will love them!"
