Girl Mistaken For Skunk Shot By Relative

A child's Halloween party went nightmarishly wrong when a 9-year-old girl was shot. NBC News reported that in New Sewickly Township in western Pennsylvania a little girl wearing a black and white skunk costume was shot at 8:02 p.m. One of her relatives had mistook her for a real skunk, confirmed NBC News.

NBC News reported that she was wearing a "black outfit and a black hat attached to a white tassel."

The girl was transported to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., about 50 minutes away, where she underwent surgery, WPXI.com reported.

The Associated Press reported that Chief Ronald Leindecker said to the Beaver County Times "that a male relative mistook her for a skunk and fired a shotgun, hitting her in the shoulder, arm, back and neck Saturday night."

CNN reported that the party which had two or three dozen guests and the little girl went to hide by a hill. The relative saw a dark black and white figure in the distance and thought it was a real skunk so he fired his gun, according to Greg Carney who is with the township police.

The AP reported that Chief Leidecker said that the man had not been drinking alcohol and that he does not know whether charges will be filed as of yet.

He also added that the young girl was alert and speaking with she was taken to the hospital. The 9-year-old was flown 30 miles away to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

CNN reported that police will determine later on Monday whether or not they will charge the man who shot the young girl, both of which they did not name.
