Morgan Freeman Dead? The Death Hoax That Won't Die

Morgan Freeman, the legendary actor with a recognizable voice is dead. At least social media says so. However, Freeman didn't die. He's just the victim of a continuous death hoax that won't seem to go away.

Freeman may have played God in "Bruce Almighty," but that wasn't enough to keep him from joining the long list of celebrities that have been killed off by social media. Being that he's 75 years old, it isn't too hard to believe that Freeman may have passed, but this rumor has been going around for over a month now and it just isn't true.

In late August, a Facebook page called R.I.P Morgan Freeman was created, leading fans to believe that the actor had died. The page currently has over 928,000 likes, showing just how huge this hoax became. In September, another R.I.P Morgan Freeman was created and gained over 60,000 likes.

After this hoax went viral across the internet, Freeman's representative quickly released a statement putting the rumors to rest.

"Morgan is alive and well, and joins the long list of actors who have been victimized by this hoax. He's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet," Morgan's representative said.

Yet the hoax seems to be picking up once again. Many claim to be seeing things on Facebook about Freeman dying again. Some are taking to Twitter to mourn and question the loss of the legendary actor.

Some recent tweets include:

"Please tell me this is a sick joke?! Is morgan freeman dead?!"

"Is Morgan Freeman really dead or is this just another dead funny thing to do on Facebook?"

"Morgan Freeman has died :'( #Legend"

"Morgan Freeman RIP. An amazing actor and human being."

"RIP Morgan Freeman, ill miss your beautiful voice"

"Just found out Morgan Freeman has died top actor and legend #RIPMorganFreeman

Freeman isn't dead, but he did just lend his famous voice to a recent Obama campaign ad. He also has a few movies coming out next year including "Oblivion" and "Now You See Me."

By the time Freeman actually dies, many will probably be skeptical because this hoax occurs so often.

The internet has exploded with celebrity death hoaxes this year. These hoaxes often start and spread on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook and some are started through fake news sources such as Global Associated News which has a death story generator, allowing people to simply input a name and have a fake death story created.

Some other celebrities who became victims of a death hoax in recent months include actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, musician Skrillex, Rapper Lil Wayne, Actor Vince Vaughn, Tom Kenny, the voice behind SpongeBob Squarepants, country singer Taylor Swift, Comedian Bill Cosby, Alfonso Ribeiro aka Carlton from the Fresh Prince, and Bill Nye the Science Guy have all been victims of death hoaxes within the past few months. All of these celebrities are just fine.
