A town on Canada is now offering $10 for a plot of land. ABC News reported that the small town of Reston in Manitoba, is selling undeveloped land for only $10.
ABC News reports that this is part of an initiative that they started in 2010. "That plan was so successful that in September the Rural Municipality of Pipestone, of which Reston is the biggest town (population: 550), decided to put up an additional 10 lots for sale, along with the three left from 2010," reported ABC News.
That means that there are currently nine lots for sale. Sizes of the plots of land range from 70 to 88 feet by 130 to 160 feet, ABC News reported.
CTVNews.ca reported that the population of the town began rising for the first time in years since the deal came about. They reported, "Before the deal was offered, the small, scenic town of Reston had a population of just 550 people. In an effort to capitalize on the mini oil boom underway in southwestern Manitoba, officials in the quaint Prairie town recently decided to sell land for $10."
To buy land those interested put down a $1,000 deposit and sign an agreement. After the lot is purchased the buyer has 90 days to start construction and one year in total to have it fully completed. When the town gets the occupancy permit then the buyer gets $990 back from the deposit, resulting in a $10 purchase, reported ABC News.
ABC News reports that Reston is also offering $6,000 "grant to people who've built a new house or purchased an existing home in the rural municipality."
The town hopes to attract small businesses to the town that is known for the agriculture and oil industry. Economic development officer Tanis Chalmers said to ABC News,
"We need to have supporting services to support the people living here and coming. We'd like to see a new hotel here, a new restaurant, a bar."
