A dog who risked its life and lost half its snout while saving two young girls is being treated by veterinarians at the University of California, Davis.
UC Davis has one of the best vet schools in the nation and "the most comprehensive dental and oral surgery services in the world, Fox News reported.
The dog, Kabang, a mixed breed, from the Philippines jumped in front of a speeding motorcycle last year in order to save her owner and her owner's niece, Fox News reported. By doing so, she lost half her snout in the accident and upper jaw.
"Veterenarians in the Philippines were unable to treat the injury, but after Kabang's story went viral, an online campaign spearheaded by Karen Kenngott, a critical care nurse from Buffalo, N.Y., raised the money to send the dog to Northern California and UC Davis," reported Fox News.
When Kabang arrived at Davis, the vets found out that she also has heartworm disease and a tumor that needs to be taken care of before they do any type of surgery on her snout.
Dr. Jane Skyes of the UC Davis said according to Fox News that treatment of these ailments may take up to six months. Then after those treatments are done, Kabang can then have surgery for her snout and dental surgery. Currently the open wound "puts Kabang at risk of infection and forces her to put excess effort into eating and drinking," reported Fox News.
Fox News also reported that they don't have plans to fit her with a prosthetic snout or give her a new jaw.
