Maine Earthquake Hits a 4.0 Magnitude

An earthquake hit Southern Maine Tuesday night.

The Associated Press reported that the earthquake was a 4.0 magnitude and hit around 7:12 p.m.

The AP reported that the earthquake hit states outside of Maine such as Connecticut and the Boston area.

At first the Geological Survey estimated the quake to be at 4.6 but downgraded it to 4.0 later. "The epicenter, about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, is about 3 miles deep. That location is about 20 miles west of Portland," said The AP.

Thus far, there have been no reported damages or injuries. Lynette Miller from the Maine Emergency Management Agency said to The AP that "It was several seconds of good shaking but nothing falling down." She lives in Readfield which is about 60 miles from Portland.

The AP reported that Jim Van Dongen who works as a public information officer for the New Hampshire Department of Safety said that 911 in New Hampshire got approximately1000 calls in the first hour after the quake occurred.

The AP reported that customers in a pizza parlor near the epicenter of the quake sent 20 people scared and running outside.

"It was loudest bang you ever heard in your life. We actually thought it was an explosion of some type. The back door and door to the basement blew open," said Jessica Hill, owner of Waterboro House of Pizza to The AP.

In Boston, there was a bit of shaking, that only lasted briefly, The AP reported.

Earthquakes in New England do not happen very often but in 2006 there were earthquakes around the Acadia National Park in Maine, The AP reported.
