Apple is set to host an event on Oct. 23 that will likely be unveiling the ipad mini to the world.
Reuters reported that an industry source who wanted to remain anonymous said that the the smaller iPad will be unveiled just before Microsoft unveils Windows 8 and the new Surface tablet on Oct. 26.
Though Apple has not officially announced the smaller ipad or the official name of the device, CNET says, "The Mini is rumored to sport a 7.85-inch screen at a price of at least $299. But when and if it debuts, it will not enter a vacuous 7-inch tablet market. Its opponents will compete on price, ecosystem, performance, and features. Each offers something unique, and Apple's new tablet will have to be an amazing piece of kit to answer the challenge."
It is unknown where the event would take place, but All Things D reported that it is likely to be at Apple's Town Hall Auditorium. All Things D reported that, "the company has debuted a number of important products there in the past - OS X Lion, a next-generation MacBook Air and the iPhone 4S - so there's plenty of precedent.
Apple's big fall event at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the arts, unveiled the highly anticpated iPhone 5 last month.
The smaller iPad will compete with similar devices in the marketplace including Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire. Both of those tablets also have a 7-inch screen and priced at $199, reports Reuters.
