In January 32 people were killed when the cruise ship, Costa Concordia, capsized in Italy after hitting a rock.
Reuters reported that the captain of the Costa Concordia who was driving it at the time has been fired as well as accused of causing the accident.
Francesco Schettino is charged with "multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship," according to Reuters. His preliminary hearings will start on Oct. 15.
The tragic accident which occired on January 13 off the island of Giglio in Tuscany. Schettino was ridiculed for abandoning ship after the incident occurred, reported Reuters.
His lawyer, Bruno Leporatti said to Reuters, "It is the right of every worker to appeal against his dismissal and Captain Schettino has done no more than exercise that right. There is nothing to contest or be amazed about, unless we want to say that what the law allows for all citizens doesn't apply for Francesco Schettino."
Now, The AFP reported that Schettino, is asking for his job back. The AFP reported that Schettino says his actions actually saved lives. He is reportedly suing for wrongful dismissal.
Currently, Schettino is under house arrest in his home of Meta di Sorrento, Italy. Five other crew members are also under investigation in the incident.
The Costa Concordia overturned only two hours after setting sail, The Daily Mail reported. The ship filled with water when a 160 ft gash occurred in the hull. Passenger Antonietta Simboli said to The Daily Mail about the incident, "Were sitting at our dinner table when there was a loud bang and things just flew off the table.The lights went off and then came back on again and then everyone just started scrambling over each other to try and get a life vest or to the life boats. People were trampling over each other and children in the chaos."
