In January 28, Chinese citizens all over the world will celebrate a century-known tradition of Chinese New Year. Billions of people, local Chinese and foreign spectators, are joining this colourful and massive festivity.
The Chinese New Year is being held at the first full moon of the year, so the date each year slightly varies. Traditionally, it lasts for fifteen days. However much of the activities are often held between two to eight days.
Chinese New Year is often marked with fireworks, dragon dances, red lanterns and other traditional Chinese customs. Most of the families would go to temple to pray and burn paper models to send "messages" to their ancestors. The best places to celebrate Chinese's New Year are:
Beijing, China. Being the capital of a very populous and big country, this city tops the list. The celebration is observed all across Beijing- from festivals, carnivals, worship ceremonies in temples to concerts, dragon dances and firework displays in public places. One noteworthy tradition though is for every Chinese family to spend the last hours of the old year cleaning and decorating their houses. They believe that this will remove the "bad lucks" of the past year and will bring prosperity in the coming year. Beijing holds a lot of fireworks displays, noise and drum parades and other sorts of activities that will drive bad spirits away.
Kulala Lumpur, Malaysia. A more sombre welcoming of the New Year is observed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Most streets and shopping malls are lined-up with lanterns and other Chinese decors. There are also light fireworks in New Year's Eve. The best place to visit for a more relaxed and subtle celebration.
Guangzhou, China turns to a very big flower basket in New Year. There are a several flower festivals that are accompanied with painting workshops, calligraphy and other various artistic performances.
Experience a modern yet traditional celebration of New Year in Hong Kong. Don't forget to join the fun at a carnival-like night parade on January 28. Look up in the skies in the evening of January 29 to witness a grand showdown of fireworks.
