A Tennessee woman is suing Southwest airlines for damages after a flight attendant reportedly spilled tea in her lap on a flight. Passenger Angelica Keller filed a lawsuit Tuesday alleging that Southwest did not warn her of any potential danger in the delivery of the tea and is suing for $800,000 in total.
The lawsuit documents explain how she ordered hot tea on Southwest flight 955 from Nashville to Houston on December 28, 2011. She had the paper cup of hot water and a clear plastic cup with a teabag on her lap. When she tried to grab the tea bag the hot water spilled in her lap.
In the lawsuit it says that even though she was fully clothed the water burned her skin and made it blister and peel, siting permanent scarring. Keller is suing Southwest for negligence and not providing a tray or warning her of the dangers of consuming tea in bulkhead seats, where she was sitting which had no drop down table.
She is asking for $300,000 for "for property damages, bodily injury, medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other related expenses" and $500,000 in punitive damages.
Southwest responded in statement, "Our Customers' safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we safely serve millions of drinks onboard every year. The referenced event is unfortunate and we are currently reviewing it. We can't provide additional details due to the pending lawsuit that was filed."
