Microsoft To Add 'Game Mode' To Windows 10 To Optimize Gaming Performance

Reports are coming in suggesting that Microsoft might add a new feature to Windows 10 which will help optimize its performance during gaming sessions. This info comes from a Twitter user named WalkingCat who discovered a new "gamemode.dll" file from a leaked version of an upcoming update for Windows 10 (version 14997). Windows Central has also reported about this, which adds further credence to this.

According to the Twitter user, the new feature is designed to allow Windows 10 to make some adjustments to both its CPU and GPU resources whenever the device is running a game. This will prompt the device to allocate more power towards the game instead of other apps running in the background. According to The Verge, this move will basically make PC's and laptops act like consoles meaning the machine's computational power will be freed up to optimize its performance whenever a game is running.

The addition of this so-called "game mode" is yet another sign telling us that Microsoft is already taking gaming on Windows 10 more seriously. The company has already made several moves that have practically blurred the line between PCs and Xbox consoles, with the latter now running Windows. Certain games also have cross-purchasing options from Xbox One to PC. If it is any indication, this sort of trend will most likely continue to go forward in 2017.

However, it is still unclear what games will be compatible with this new feature. There is a possibility that it could only be limited to games downloaded from the Windows store, but it might also be more far reaching. The feature will be included in the Creators update which is scheduled to go live sometime in the spring of 2017. Microsoft has announced that the update will include a few features for gamers such as live streaming and tournaments.
