‘Your Name’ Nominated For Oscars; Hit Anime Being Compared To Success Of 'Spirited Away'

The success and recognitions of "Kimi No Na Wa" or popularly known as "Your Name" have not been limited to Asia alone but also to other continents as it recently won the 2016 Los Angeles Film Critics Association for the category "Best Animated Film." The film has a greater possibility to be nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar) as it was already been considered to be a huge blockbuster success not only in Japan but to other countries.

"Your Name" was written and directed by 43-year old Makoto Shinkai and tells a story of two destined teenager who accidentally switch bodies. According to BBC, the anime film has attracted the attention of audience especially in China because the movie is very flexible as it fits with ACGN (Anime, Comic, Game and Novel). The net gross of the film continues to grow as it also topped the weekend box office rankings in Thailand, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It was also recently released in China and in Los Angeles making the film to place the unbeatable spot.

"Your Name" has set an impressive accomplishment and recognition in Japan. The film was not only one of the highest grossing film but it has also surpassed Hollywood and iconic movies including "The Wind Rises" , "Princess Mononoke", and "Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone". As of December 17, the film was the highest earning Japanese movie ever to be released in Chinese theaters.

On the other hand, as reported by Nippon, "Your Name" author, Makoto Shinkai is now compared to a renowned anime blockbuster author and director "Spirited Away" Miyazaki Hayao. At the current gross standing "Your Love" ranked second as "Spirited Away" is still the highest grosser among Japanese anime. During an interview, Shinkai revealed that his work and Miyazaki's work is of totally different styles as he always relay the cultural tradition and customs of Japan in all his creations, in other words, he loves doing local anime.

Furthermore, Shinkai loves to do local anime because he wanted to showcase Tokyo to the viewers no matter what nationality they are. It is in Tokyo where Shinkai lives his life, as he wanted to correlate allh is works to himself or to the place where he lives. For instance, going back in the film, Mitsuha (Lead) was born and raised in a fictional little mountain but he actually pictured this in reality as it represents the beautiful landscapes of Koumi in Nagano Prefecture where the author grew up.
