Flight cancellations at American Airlines have increased due to conflicts with pilots and staff shortages.
The airline will reduce flights partially because of staffing shortages. On Sunday and Monday, American canceled more flights than any other airline.
Bruce Hicks who is a spokesman for AMR Corp which owns American Airlines said to The AP that American was "constantly evaluating our schedule based on operational and staffing resources."
The cancellations have occurred after the airline imposed a new term on pilots which includes outsourcing more pilot jobs to other airlines and canceling one of the pilot's retirement programs in November.
Last week, the union sent out ballots for a vote for strike-authorization. Allied Pilots Association spokesman Tom Hoban said to The AP, "That being said, you've got 8,000 pilots that are witnessing a handful of senior executives at American Airlines that have chosen in a very deliberate manner to dismantle and destroy their profession. To say that the pilots at AA are not happy would be the understatement of a lifetime."
By late afternoon Monday, American had canceled 57 flights. According to FlightAware.com and FlightStats, American canceled 95 flights. This is 5 percent of their schedule and more than nine other airlines combined.
On Sunday, American had 90 cancellations out of 318 flights canceled industry wide.
