"Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story" had a pretty huge opening weekend grossing in more than $290 million worldwide. North America accounted for more than half of the movie's worldwide opening weekend gross, making around $155 million according to info from Realtor Exhibitions. The film premiered in almost every major global market over the weekend with the exception of China and South Korea.
The film had the second best-recorded opening weekend for December in the U.K., the U.S., and Canada. The record for the best December opening weekend is held by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", which made more than $248 million in the U.S. market. Based on its opening weekend figures, it is safe to say that the film has lived up to expectations.
ComScore analyst Paul Dergarabedian believes the next in the Stars Saga has the potential to become the "biggest movie of all time" based on the success of "Rogue One" and "The Force Awakens." James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar" currently holds that title as it made $2.9 billion worldwide, followed closely by another James Cameron flick, "Titanic" (1997), which earned $2.2 billion in box office sales. "The Force Awakens" made a total of $2.07 billion.
Disney, which purchased LucasFilm for $4 billion back in 2012, had been trying to downplay fan expectation for Rogue One, according to a report from Fortune. This is the very first Star Wars film whose story takes place outside of the Skywalker storyline. Disney executives have also noted that the film will be much darker than other Star Wars films and will have a higher body count.
Rogue One stars Riz Ahmed and Felicity Jones, alongside Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, and Diego Luna. The film takes place before the events of 1977's "A New Hope" and tells the story of a group of rebels who try to steal plans for the dreaded Death Star. The film has been well-received by critics with a review from The Guardian rating it four out of five stars.
