Harry Potter Series News: First Look At ‘Sorting Hat’ Spider Doppelganger

A new species of spider has been found in the Kans forest area of Karnataka in India. But it's not just any other regular spider. Eriovixia gryffindori may just be the sorting hat's doppelganger!

Three Indian scientists and naturalists have made the discovery earlier this year. The seven millimeter arachnid has the ability to stay hidden in dried foliage to protect itself from its predators. The discovery was featured in the Indian Journal of Arachnology's December issue.

Javed Ahmed, Rajashree Khalap and Sumukha Javagal may be Harry Potter series' biggest nerds when it came to giving the spider its identity. According to Mail Online, the new found species looks extremely like the sorting hat that they swore to name it after the most famous headwear in both the wizarding and the muggle world. After confirming that it is indeed a new and recently discovered species, the three scientists have named it Eriovixia gryffindori.

The sorting hat in the "Harry Potter" series was owned by Godric Gryffindor, one of the founders of Hogwarts School or Witchcraft and Wizardry. It can be reviewed that it was this particular hat which brought together Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in the first book of the most popular fictional series, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". Aside from the iconic headwear, spiders also played a vital role in the Harry Potter series, and is Weasley's biggest fear.

Aside from publishing their work, Ahmed, Khalap and Javagal made it a point to inform Harry Potter series' author, J. K. Rowling. The discovery was in time for the movie release of another one of Rowling's Harry Potter spin-offs, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". According to CBS News, the author replied with much delight and excitement.

Eriovixia gryffindori is only one of five new species of spiders that the three scientists have discovered. Certainly, these new discoveries is only the start, which hopefully would give more attention and interest to these neglected arachnids.
