Snapchat Now Has Group Chats: Here's How To Start One

Snap addicts, get ready for the early Christmas gift Snapchat gave us all: the availability of group chats. After so long, Snapchat finally made group chatting available on their latest update. With this, you can send a group snap to over 16 people at once.

Snapchat Groups work like common group chatting apps like Google Hangouts and Facebook Messenger. It's like a one-on-one chat but with this, you can include 16 people. But like the app itself, all snaps in a group chat will be permanently deleted after 24 hours, and can only be replayed once by each recipient.

To start a group chat, you should first update your Snapchat on the App Store or Google Play. After that, you'll be able to see the New Chat icon. Click on it and pick the people you want to be included in the chat and voila! Although of course, you can only include people if you're both friends on Snapchat.

Groups can be made after you send a snap or if you manually make a group chat. If you want to send a snap directly to the group, simply click the send button and choose which group you want to send your snap to in the Send To screen. Afterwards, all the added people in the group will be able to see your snap, likewise, you'll see who are the ones who've read it.

Also, if you want to send a private message to someone in the group, just tap your friend's name and you can send your private message. Just swipe it back to return to the group chat screen.

The team behind Snapchat was first to give us a quick rundown on how the update works during their press release last Tuesday. "Groups can be created while sending a Snap, or when you're making a new Chat," they said.

"When your friends are present in a Group Chat, we show their name at the bottom of the Chat. Simply tap their name to start a 1:1 Chat, and then easily return to the Group in one swipe! We call this Quick Chat, and it's the fastest way to keep the conversation going with one friend without spamming the entire Group."
