Ni Hao, the young cat, which survived a three-week, 6,500-mile journey across the Pacific Ocean in a shipping container, is going to a new home.
Ni Hao, which means Hello in Chinese, was found on July 11 at the Port of Los Angeles inside a freight container that came from Shanghai. When found, the now five-month-old kitten appeared dead as it was curled up in a ball and couldn't walk, see or make sounds. However Ni Hao had survived the journey. He was treated and held by the Carson Animal Care Center for two months.
Ni Hao is almost as good as new as he has recovered from his almost deadly journey. Now he is a playful, affectionate and curious kitten. The only signs that remain are his limp. The kitten suffered muscle atrophy during the trip which causes him to walk with a wobbly, unusual gait. Ni Hao may be a special needs kitty for life, but he has found someone who is willing to take care of him.
In fact many people wanted Ni Hao after seeing his story. More than 80 applicants around the world wanted to adopt the kitten, but one lucky family in Redonda Beach was chosen to welcome Ni Hao into their home.
"We couldn't be happier with our selection. We know the new pet parents will provide Ni-Hao with the special attention he needs to settle into his new home," department Director Marcia Mayeda said to MSNBC.
Ni Hao will go to his new home on Thursday.
