A California delegate to the Democratic National Convention was sent home after pretending to be a member of Congress and causing a drunken scene at a hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina.
At around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning, two delegates returned to the Blake Hotel, where they were staying, while intoxicated. One of the men was being carried and appeared to be unconscious, which caused alarm among hotel staff.
Paramedics were called to the hotel to attend to the unconscious man and take him to the hospital. The other drunk delegate was disruptive and started fighting with hotel staff and the paramedics. The drunk man tried to argue that he was a member of Congress and that his friend just needed to go to bed. Despite being intoxicated, he was not arrested.
The unconscious man was treated and released from the hospital.
Democratic Party officials met with the delegate who made a scene and asked him to leave the hotel. He is also not allowed to participate in convention activities. The man apologized to hotel staff for his behavior and agreed with the punishment. He will not be allowed to participate in Wednesday's presidential roll call vote. He will be replaced by one of the 46 alternate delegates.
The names of the delegates have not been released.
