Paralympic Games 2012: Possible Transport Issues for Commuters

London's transport authorities have stated to Londoners that they should not underestimate the Paralympic Games effects on transport.

The games are entering their second week and officials are warning that it might be as busy as during the Olympics.

Many schools are opening after summer holidays and commuters are returning to work making the rush hour traffic higer than in the summer, during the Olympics.

Paralympic Games visitors will also be adding to the traffic. However, disruption is expected to be limited because fewer venues are being used than in the Olympics.

A TfL spokeswoman said to The Guardian, "The Paralympics has unique and different challenges, and working life is resuming and schools are going back. We're still encouraging people to 'get ahead of the Games' and not to underestimate the effect they could have on the transport network and the city more generally. People can't assume it will be business as usual."

The busiest day of the Paralympics will see about 215,000 people traveling to the Olympic Park in Stratford. Temporary wheelchair ramps will also be placed in as many as 66 stations that have step-free access while campaigners have asked to make all of them permanent.

Lianna Etkind of the group Transport for All said to The Guardian, "It would be ludicrous for TfL to spend thousands on installing the ramps, only to rip them out again afterwards."
