Starting March 2018, Australia and London will finally have a non-stop direct flight. Qantas Airlines announced that they will start selling tickets as early as April 2017.
Perth Airport will delegate this new flight from Qantas Airlines, using their Boeing 787 Dreamliners aircraft. This 14,498-kilometer flight will take about 17 hours to and fro, 14 times a week, depending on the weather conditions.
As Europe and Australia never had a direct link before, this will open up big opportunities on both sides. According to The Guardian, Colin Barnett, Western's Australia's premier, has promised $14 million to help upgrade Perth's Airport with this incoming new flight. Several infrastructure projects must be improved since they are planning to use Terminal 1 in 2025 and to make sure other customers using the said terminal will not be inconvenienced.
"The tourism benefits to the state are enormous. The service will create opportunities for people to stop over in Perth for a day or two if en route to or from another Australian destination." Barnett said.
Perth's economy will greatly increase with this new flight, particularly in the retail and hospitality sector. And since major infrastructure projects will take place, such as immigration, customs, and quarantine construction, several jobs will be offered.
This is Qantas' longest flight ever, and the world's third longest. Currently, the longest flight is an Emirates Airlines 14,200 kilometers Dubai-to-Auckland flight that started in March 2016 and takes 16 hours 35 minutes, while the second longest is the 13,800 kilometers Qantas Dallas-Sydney route that takes 17 hours to reach their destination.
This flight is the first of its kind for Qantas, and customer satisfaction is their top priority. With their 787 Dreamliners aircraft, future passengers will enjoy more storage areas, personal device holders, and USB ports, as well as an extra inch of legroom in the economy class.
The future looks very promising to Qantas Airlines. If everything goes smoothly, they will open up other direct flights from Perth to other European cities, such as Paris and Frankfurt.
