During her appearance on last Friday's episode of the Graham Norton Show, Jennifer Lawrence shared an anecdote about an incident that took place in Hawaii. The star's story made a lot of people angry, with some people calling her 'disrespectful'.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence, who was on the BBC1 show with "Passengers" co-star Chris Pratt, said she used the "sacred rocks" in their Hawaiian location for filming "Catching Fire" for "butt scratching".
"There were sacred rocks. I don't know. They were ancestors. Who knows? But you're not supposed to sit on them because you're not supposed to expose your genitalia to them," the actress said.
"One rock that I was butt-scratching on ended up coming loose, and it was a giant boulder, and it rolled down the mountain, and it almost killed our sound guy," Lawrence said while laughing. "It was this huge dramatic deal, and all the Hawaiians were like, 'It's the curse!' And I'm in the corner going, 'I'm your curse. I wedged it loose with my ass,'" the actress added.
The "stones" that Lawrence meant are considered sacred by locals, because they may be the physical manifestation of a deity or ancestor, or based on their purpose like birthing stones imbued with mana (spiritual power) of the chiefs.
US Magazine reported that after the interview hit the web, people called on the Academy winner to apologize. "It doesn't get more white and evil. What quirky racist adventure will Jennifer Lawrence go on next?", commented a Twitter user.
The 26-year old star issued a statement in Facebook saying: "I meant absolutely no disrespect to the Hawaiian people. I really thought that I was being self-deprecating about the fact that I was 'the curse,' but I understand the way it was perceived was not funny and I apologize if I offended anyone."
