How cold is it every November? And, how cold is it in Helsinki? Reports say the city can go as to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
So, Slush Media welcomed welcomed and warned participants and tourists to their conference with a sign that reads, "Nobody in their right mind would come to Helsinki in November. Except you, you badass. Welcome." Yes. That's how Finland greets its visitors.
Finland's cold temperature makes it hard for their tourism board to invite potential foreign visitors to their country. But organizers of a tech start-up conference dared to raise the humorous (but, true) banner to welcome their attendees.
In an interview with Indy 100, Slush CEO Marianne Vikkula said that the country, every November is "probably the worst possible place you can imagine." She continued saying that it's dark, wet and cold and is quite difficult to promote the city.
But despite it all, their company has always been about keeping it real and tries to make the best out of the weather. Though Vikkula, has stated that it is really hard to market the cold country, statistics show that Helsinki receives 3.5 million visitors just last year alone.
The city's official site reported that 437,000 international cruise ship passenger guests and 254 cruise ship visited Helsinki. There were about 35,200 conference delegates in the 275 international conferences that occurred last year.
Helsinki tourism reports says, popular attractions around the city are the expo and convention center Messukeskus Helsinki and Linnanmäki Amusement Park, which welcomes around a million, Suomenlinna, Korkeasaari Zoo, Helsinki Cathedral, Temppeliaukio Church and Uspenski Cathedral.
We may not know the stats for this year's yet, but that viral slogan would surely whoop up the numbers. Remember, if you're going to Helsinki anytime soon, you are one cool, badass tourist that can handle the frost. Thanks to Slush.
