Apple gave a federal judge eight Samsung Electronics Co. products that it wants to see banned from the U.S. market.
On Monday, Apple provided the list to U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh after a jury in San Jose gave Samsung a $1.05 billion verdict for "willfully" copying Apple's iPad and iPhone in creating and marketing products.
Apple said that Samsung had ripped off a number of features from their products including, the slide to lock unlock feature on iPhones, searching multiple sources of information at once, which is what Apple's Siri does. Apple also said that Samsung also ripped off their feature that detects phone numbers in emails so you can simply tap the number to call someone as well as a built in spell check.
Apple wants the following phones off the market:
Galaxy S 4G
Galaxy S2 AT&T
Galaxy S2
Galaxy S2 T-Mobile
Galaxy S2 Epic 4G
Galaxy S Showcase
Droid Charge
Galaxy Prevail
This list is of items that are still being sold in U.S. stores. Their new, bestselling Galaxy S3 is not affected by the lawsuit at this point, but might subsequently also be banned without a full trial.
A hearing has been scheduled for September 20 to discuss Apple's demands. Samsung plans to ask that the judge gets rid of the jury's verdict as being unsupported by evidence. The company said they will also appeal the verdict to higher courts.
Apple also plans to ask the judge for $3.15 billion because the jury found that Samsung "willfully" copied Apple.
In April of last year, Apple filed a lawsuit that alleged Samsung had copied their iPhones and iPads. Samsung counterclaimed that Apple used its wireless technology without adequate compensation.
The jury unanimously sided with apple and rejected Samsung's claims.
A nine-person jury in its verdict Friday unanimously agreed with Apple and most of the damages were tied to Samsung's smartphones. The jury rejected Samsung's counterclaims.
The question whether Samsung will have to redesign their phones is one that is still looming.
