A body of a stowaway was found in the landing gear of a British Airways 747 as it landed at Heathrow Airport in London Thursday.
The flight came from Cape Town South Africa and the authorities at the airport said that they saw a man jumping a fence before running towards the BA flight. Security chased him but had to stop due to safety reasons and the search after that to find the man, failed.
BA is working with authorities from South Africa and the Cape Town airport to find out how the person was able to sneak on the BA 747.
According to the Associated Press, London police are working to secure the identity of the man.
A search for the aircraft was conducted immediately after the man ran towards the aircraft, but he wasn't found. A spokeswoman from Airports Company South Africa that runs Cape Town airport said to the BBC, "The airport immediately responded and, as a security patrol officer attempted to apprehend the man, he ran in the direction of a British Airways aircraft already in its holding pattern ready for take-off.
For safety reasons the security officer could not approach the aircraft. A search of the airfield was immediately conducted but the person was not found ... British Airways, in addition to various other parties, wee notified. Further sweeps were conducted of the runway and the broader airfield."
There was a full-fledged investigation of the incident and British Airways expressed concern about the deceased man in a statement, "This is a very rare and sad event and our thoughts are with the individual's family."
