A new analysis by Fake Follower Check a tool created from social media firm, StatusPeople, shows that out of President Obama's 19 million Twitter followers, 70 percent of them are fake or "inactive."
That means 13 million of Obama's twitter followers are either fake or inactive. From the analysis Fake Follower Check found that 5.7 million, or 30 percent of his followers were labeled as fake while 40 percent were labeled as inactive.
Mitt Romney's Twitter account showed that 15 percent or 135,000 were considered fake out of his 900,000 followers total.
Fake Follower Check analyzes a sampling of Twitter account's followers and looks for signs that it would be a fake account. Fake accounts are accounts created for the purpose of spreading spam while inactive accounts mean that they have not had any recent updates on their accounts.
Analysis of Twitter accounts has shown that the more popular the account, such as someone like President Obama, the more likely there will be fake followers, ie spammers. Fake Twitter followers is also a product that can be purchased with websites offering services for the price of as little as $0.01 per follower to create the allusion that a specific Twitter account has mass appeal and popularity.
Even Lady Gaga, for example, has 71 percent of her nearly 29 million followers as fake or inactive, according to StatusPeople.
Fake accounts also follow a large number of individuals but have a low number of followers. Rob Waller, founder of StatusPeople said to the New York Times that "We then combine that with a few other metrics to confirm the account is fake."
Both the Obama and Romney campaigns have denied paying for Twitter followers.
