The import from Paris, Diner en Blanc--a flash mobesque moveable feast, is set for tonight in Manhattan at an undisclosed location. Diner en Blanc, is logistically one of the world's biggest, most exclusive, dinner parties and now hosts locations around the globe.
Today, thousands of New Yorkers will be invited to the event at a secret outdoor location somewhere in Manhattan. The dinner is organized entirely by word of mouth and social media and attended by thousands worldwide. At one of these soireees guests are donned elegantly in white and bring their own silverware, white tables, chairs and even food. No paper plates or plastic cutlery allowed, only fine china and silverware to accompany the candles and champagne glasses that diners usually bring to accompany the al fresco dining experience. Live music is also part of the moveable feast. At 10:30 guests pack up and there is no trace of the decadent soiree earlier that night.
The exact location of tonight's event will not be announced until the last minute and only to those who got an invite through word of mouth. Others will be taken off of the waiting list. Last year there were 30,000 people on its waiting list and this year there are an expected 3,200 people attending the feast.
2011's Diner en Blanc was held on the Lower Manhattan waterfront outside of the World Financial Center. Tonight's location is still a mystery to preserve secrecy. Guests are directed to meet in groups of 250 at rallying points where leaders will escort them to the location. Here are some spots that we think could host tonight's exclusive event:
Eponomyous with Manhattan, Central Park is one of the world's most famous parks not to mention a gorgeous backdrop with its looming trees, swan-filled lakes and historic buildings. Imagine the glowing, candlelit feast in the backdrop to the park's Belvedere Castle.
A busy hub in Downtown Manhattan, Union Square with its picturesque plaza, Union Square Park and easily accessible location would be an ideal space for Diner en Blanc.
A Manhattan landmark, Washington Square Park with the glowing Washington Arch in the background would be a beautiful space for tonight's event.
The urban oasis is a seven-acre park in Manhattan's Flatiron District is situated in the center of the city.
Iconic Bryant park is the backdrop for New York Fashion Week and an ideal gathering space for large events like this one.
