When two women returned from a four-week vacation to their apartment in Stockholm, they got a very unwelcome surprise. The roommates had rented out their apartment on Airbnb, and allegedly, their abode had been used as a temporary brothel.
The roommates came back to their apartment to find a note in the mail from the Stockholm County Police that said their home had been raided on August 11. The note stated that two prostitutes had been caught performing sex acts with clients.
Airbnb is a popular online rental marketplace, where homeowners can rent out their apartment to travelers for short periods of time. Upon returning to their home, the two women found a plastic bag of used condoms in their apartment.
The homeowners said to London's The Kernel magazine that the renters looked "very high class, with business suits. We feel uneasy about being in our own apartment after this," the homeowner said.
Airbnb gives hosts a $1,000,000 guarantee in the event that there are damages to their property. In this case they accommodated the owners in a pricey hotel and had the place professionally cleaned.
An Airbnb spokesperson said to NBC News, "Since learning of this incident, we have been in close contact with the host and we continue to offer them our support. We immediately and permanently removed the offending guest account from Airbnb, we have been in contact with law enforcement and will help with their ongoing investigation."
Though this type of situation is not common, it does happen. Bad actors in our system are extremely rare but we strongly encourage our hosts to use the trust and safety tools we make available to help detect any problem users in advance." said Airbnb in a statement to NBC News.
