The 2012 Olympic Games have come to a close in London and the final Olympic medal count is in with the United States dominating the medal chart.
The United States took home the most medals this year. Out of the 104 medals won, 46 were gold, 29 were silver and 29 were bronze. The People's Republic of China took home 87 medals, 38 of which were gold, 27 silver and 22 bronze. The Russian Federation had the third highest medal count at 82. They received 24 gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze.
Great Britain, whose capital of London hosted this year's Olympics also did well. Great Britain ha the fourth highest medal count. Out of their 65 medals, 29 were gold, 17 were silver, and 19 were bronze.

Many nations got a taste of the Olympic medal podium during the games as 85 of the 204 nations that participated received at least one medal. Some nations had a lot to celebrate as they made it to the Olympic podium for the first time ever. Seven countries, including Grenada, took home a medal for the first time.
Some countries had big surprises on the medal count. Kazakhstan has overwhelming success this year for a nation that never finished higher than 22nd in the overall medal count since they started playing in the Games in 1996. This year, they took home seven gold medals, one silver, and five bronze for their excellence in weightlifting, boxing and wrestling, jumping, and even cycling.
The most medals the Islamic Republic of Iran had ever won was seven in 1952 until the 2012 Olympic Games. They took home 12 medals this time with four golds, five silver, and three bronze. Many of their medals came from the weightlifting competition.
India's medal count is also a bit surprising. For a country that has the second largest population in the world, they don't do very well in the Olympic Games, however the 2012 Olympic Games were their best yet. India only won six medals in the last seven Olympic Games, but they took home six overall this time with two silver and four bronze.
Team USA dominated the medal count this year and women dominated the men. Out of all the gold medals won, 63 percent were won by women, which are represented by the top 10 medal winners for the team.
Swimmer Michael Phelps had an amazing end to his Olympic career. He was the top medal winner of the 2012 Games, taking home six medals, which also helped him become the most decorated Olympian of all time at 22 medals.
This was Missy Franklin's first Olympics, but she took home the second highest number of medals. She brought home five medals including four gold and a bronze. Fellow swimmer Allison Schmitt also took home five medals, three of which were gold and two bronze.
