Great Britain's Prince Harry released a statement to the press to stop harassing his girlfriend, American actress, Meghan Markle through the official Kensington Palace Twitter account. For the first time, the palace gave a rare statement confirming the couple's much talked about relationship according to the CNN report.
On the statement it said, "the past week has seen a line crossed." It also accused the press and the social media of making sexist and racial abuse directed to Markle said CNN. Below is the link of Kensington Palace's official statement regarding the controversy. "His girlfriend Meghan Markle has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this have been very public -- the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism of social media trolls and web article comments," as read on the public statement that was issued by Prince Harry's communications secretary as reported by CNN.
Part of the statement also claims that the actress' mother was also being dragged on the issue . As it read, "Some of it has been hidden from the public -- the nightly battles to keep defamatory stories out of the papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers to get to her front door." The palace's warning has finally ended the media's speculation if the two were in a relationship. The statement also mentioned that photographers try to break into Markle's home in Toronto, where her TV series "Suits" is being filmed and that her ex-boyfriend was offered "substantial bribes" by various newspapers said CNN.
"Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her," as read on the statement. The prince gave the statement to the press so that they could "pause and reflect before any further damage is done," according to CNN.
The relationship was heavily reported by the British media, who made a big deal of Markle's heritage for her mother is African American and her father is Caucasian. As CNN reported, it said that "The Daily Mail" headlined a story, "Harry's girl is almost straight outta Compton," and her mother lives in a "run-down area" in Crenshaw, Los Angeles. Another British newspaper called "The Sun" described the actress as a "brunette" and a "break from the mould for Prince Harry, who has previously dated a string of blondes," also according to CNN.
On 2015, the palace also released a similar statement to "ward off" the paparazzi of taking photos of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton. The palace's recent warning has echoed Harry's experience when he was only 12 when his mother Princess Diana was killed in a car crash as she was chased by the paparazzi to get her photographed.
"This is very much part of William and Harry's life as it is...They remember vividly what happened to her, and this is what is behind the statement," said royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams based on the CNN article. The commentator said that there had been very few ocassions that the royal family explicitly tells the media to back off. "There have been other appeals, but there haven't been appeals quite like this one, especially the racist aspect to it and the angle of harassment," he added . Below is the video report that covers Prince Harry's public statement.
