After Demonoid was hit by a DDoS attack, there was some hope that the site might come back at some point, but those hopes are now crushed. The popular BitTorrent site was busted by police.
The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack caused Demonoid to shut down as a single admin tried to fix the extensive problems that the attack caused. There were rumors that government intervention was to blame, but the admin assured users that it was just an extensive DDoS attack. The admin told fans of the site that it would be back up and running after an indefinite period of time, however the site was discovered by local Ukrainian authorities who put an end to it completely.
In the middle of last week, the site came back to life, but it kept redirecting users to sites full of advertisements and malware. The site then shut down again. Now the reason is clear.
TorrentFreak reports that government officials arrived at ColoCall, the largest datacenter in the Ukraine, to shut down Demonoid completely.
"Investigators have copied all the information from the servers Demonoid and sealed them," an anonymous ColoCall source told TorrentFreak. "Some equipment was not seized, but now it does not work, and we were forced to terminate the agreement with the site."
There were also rumors that the site may have been hacked, in addition to the DDoS site, which turned out to be true.
"Shortly after [the DDoS] a hacker break-in occurred, and a few days later came the investigators," the source told TorrentFreak.
Demonoid went out of its way to not break Ukrainian law by blocking all Ukrainian IP addresses, but the site still got the attention of authorities and some believe the United States was involved.
The Demonoid raid coincided with the Deputy Prime Minister Valery Khoroshovsky's trip to the United States to discuss things such as copyright infringement. Ukraine promised the U.S. that it would step up its efforts against copyright infringement. The U.S. will be pleased to learn that Demonoid, one of the largest BitTorrent sites out there, has been shut down.
Despite the Ukraine housing Demonoid, the site's management is based in Mexico. The admin is reportedly not in custody. Last week, he said that the site would be back up and running. To do that now, they'll have to find a new country for the site's servers, something that has been done before. Otherwise, Demonoid is done for good.
Fans of the Demonoid Facebook page are already displaying their anger and grief over the news.
