Apple may have been a bit stingy regarding its Mac upgrades earlier this week, but the company has been going full force in the construction of what's become known as the Apple spaceship campus. It can be remembered that Steve Jobs himself pitched the campus to the Cupertino City Council a few months before he passed away which is almost exactly five years ago.
Time flies so fast, and the new Apple Campus 2 has been making progress quite well. Last September 2014, some early drone footage circulated, featuring where the ground had been broken, and some of the earthworks in progress. However, it's been two years then, and intrepid drone pilot Matthew Roberts has been surveilling the campus on a daily basis with his DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone.
In the recently released video, Roberts shows how construction has progressed considerably. In the main circular structure, the canopy, which contains a vast array of solar cells, is making good progress. As the drone flies, the Apple employee fitness center can be spotted. At around 100,000 square feet, it's roughly the size of a Home Depot store. Also shown is the main R&D facility, which is not included in the circular space station structure itself. Despite not that visible, there's a hump in the ground where a tunnel is being built, making a way to a garage that is supposed to be able to house 11,000 vehicles.
According to Zdnet, there are two main garages revealed in the video. Roberts also mentioned that there will be 300 car charging stations. There's also a fly-over of a structure that appears to be surprisingly like an old Apple TV remote. At 1:59, a small circular building can be seen. There are claims that this would be the entrance to the new product launch auditorium, which is apparently underground.
Meanwhile, Highs Nobiety said that the new campus cost $5 billion USD, making it $1 billion USD over the original budget. Apple Campus 2 features everything from an underground auditorium for showcasing new products, to a ton of solar panels, an underground parking garage that houses up to 11,000 cars, amongst others.
