Four months after their legal marriage, Nicole Johnson and Michael Phelps are celebrating in Mexico. The 23-time Olympic gold medalist uploaded an Instagram photo on Sunday of him walking down the aisle with the former Miss California USA. He wrote, "My best friend, I love you!" Johnson also shared a photo of her walking with Phelps on a beach while dressed in a wedding gown.
Neither of the couple revealed where the ceremony took place, but several media outlets report it was in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. According to Fox News, it was revealed last week that Phelps and Johnson legally got married in Arizona on June 13, and Phelps acknowledged that he had "been married for a while" in a Facebook Live video posted Thursday.
Before their 2015 engagement, Johnson had an eight-year-on-and-off relationship with the swimmer. She was his biggest cheerleader during his thrilling races in Rio, but Johnson said her time with the most decorated Olympian of all time was not always easy. People quoted Johnson saying, "There definitely were times, and I think Michael would say the same thing, where I hated him. We were at odds at times. Even when I loathed him, there were still times when I was like, 'God I wish I was with him. Michael and I both know that had we tried to have a child and get married in the previous time we were together, it probably would not have ended pretty. We both had a lot of growing up to do."
She further said that they both had "a lot of learning to do" before they could settle down and begin a life together. Meanwhile, Phelps and Johnson welcomed their son, Boomer Robert Phelps, on May 5. Boomer also has his own Instagram account already. Johnson revealed that Phelps runs it, and she loves watching him do it. Lastly, Johnson shared that she sends the pictures and Phelps would do the posting.
