Chic-fil-A: Anti-Gay Comments by Owner, Protestors Stage Same Sex Kiss Day [PHOTOS]

"National Same Sex Kiss Day" is being promoted by gay rights supporters by encouraging people to go to Chick-fil-A restaurants Friday and kiss members of the same sex.

The protest came after Chic-fil-A owner, Dan Cathy said that he does not believe in same-sex marriage and that his company supports "the biblical definition of the family unit."

Carly McGehee, a Dallas political activist came up with the idea of the kiss-in and said that more than 150,000 people said they would join in, since she posted the announcement on her Facebook page July 19.

Protestors have been gathering at restaurants around the country to stage the Kiss-in. Mark Toomajian who visited a chain in Decatur, Georgia with his partner Jim Fortier, said to Reuters, "It's a human rights issue, it's not a First Amendment issue."

Some supporters of Chic-fil-A however believe it to be an issue of freedom of speech. Wednesday, the chain created a Chick-fil-A appreciation day and had swarms of supporters coming into Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country.

Dave VanLenten from Vernon, New Jersey, said he stopped into the local fast food restaurant to show his support for free speech. "It's not that one side is right or wrong" he said to USA TODAY.

At the dismay of many gay rights supporters, Chic-fil-A supporters gave the chain a record setting day, according to a chain spokesman.

A Chic-fil-A spokesman, Steve Robinson said about the kiss-in that the restaurant's goal was "to provide great food, genuine hospitality and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A."
