Cambodia's cuisine is often compared to its neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. Still, Cambodians offer a lot of other dishes that are simply unique. Here is a list of their most famous and delicious food.
Fish Amok
Known as Cambodia's national dish, Fish Amok's special taste came from its special curry paste that is made of galangal, lemongrass, turmeric roots, chili, shallots, and ginger. Coconut milk and white fish are added to the kroeung paste which is steamed in a banana leaf.
Bai Sach Chrouk
This one is basically a dish of pork and rice. Bai Sach Chrouk is popular as a breakfast meal for Cambodians. The pork is marinated in soy sauce, garlic, and coconut milk. It is grilled until it caramelizes. The pork dish is translated differently in households since no two Bai Sach Chrouk are alike but it is generally served as rice and pickles with pork as toppings.
Nom Banh Chok
Nom Banh Chok is Cambodia's noodle dish. Also a breakfast food, the rice noodles is mixed with a variety of vegetables such as bean sprouts, cucumber, green beans, mint, basil, and banana leaves. It is often sold by women rounding up the streets who mix the ingredients together in front of the customer as you order it.
Khmer Red Curry
Generally served in holidays and special occasions, this curry is made of kroeung paste, coconut milk and beef, fish, or chicken as the main meat ingredient. It is served on Pchum Ben or Ancestors Day when Cambodians and monks commemorates their departed ones.
Grilled Seafood
Cambodians are fond of street foods, and thd grilled variety cannot be missed in the streets. Grilled squid is one of the popular ones, partnered with some greens on the side.
