Gabby Douglas, gymnast for US women's gymnastics team, is the all-around gold medal winner. The young gymnast beat Russia's Viktoria Komova and took home the gold.
Douglas, a 16-year-old from Virginia is the 2012 all-around gymnastics queen. The "Flying Squirrel," as she is nicknamed, finished with a score of 62.232 after a falter-free performance. She scored a 15.033 during her high-energy floor routine after her 15.5 routine on the balance beam. She started off with a high score of 15.966 followed by another high 15.733 on her speciality, the uneven bars.
Russia's Victoria Kimova took home the silver medal with a 61.97 as she was unable to pass Douglas' score during the final floor routine. She needed a 15.36 or higher to pass Douglas, but she was only able to pull a 15.100, putting her just three-tenths behind Douglas. Russia's Aliya Mustafina took the bronze medal with a score of 59.566.
Douglas is the fourth American to ever win the all-around gold medal. The last two golds were won by Nastia Luikin in 2008 and Carly Patterson in 2004. The first American woman to win the title was Mary Lou Retton in 1984.
Aly Raisman, the other all-around competitor form team USA had the same score as Mustafina, but she didn't get the medal after losing in an execution score tiebreaker.
Raisman and Douglas took the coveted spots at the two all-around finalists from the U.S. Jordyn Weiber, who earned gold in the 2011 World Championships for gymnastics, faced a huge upset when her two teammates took the spot that she dreamed of. According to a new rule, only two gymnasts per country are allowed to compete in the all-around and Weiber was knocked out during qualifications.
However, the gymnastics team has had more good news this past week. The team of Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Weiber, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross pulled off amazing team performances to take home the women's team gold medal, beating out Russia.
