Even though public toilets can either be something that is convenient for most or something that is seen as more of a nuisance. It depends whether a public toilet is readily maintained by its custodians as well as if it charges those who use it with a fee.
In Cambridge, Super Loo is a tried and tested public toilet that is finally closing after 13 years of serving its patrons. According to Stuff, "The much-loved Victoria Square facility "semi-closed" on Sunday after a report in September to the Waipa District Council showed falling patronage."
For Gary Rongonui, the man who is in charge of the Super Loo in Cambridge, can now consider 13 years of his service in the can, so to speak. He says that he is going to miss his routine in running the Super Loo as well as the people he gets to meet on a daily basis.
Rongonui also said that while his day to day job is pretty repetitive, there are some instances which he remembers pretty well and considers them as stand outs.
From problems like forgetting to get the entry charge which costs 50 cents, dealing with punks who deliberately refuse to pay and even some who went to the extremes with alcohol to meeting rich and well-known celebrities like Mike Hoskingrave, a TV and radio host as well as Craig Busch, also known as "The Lion Man" and Sir Howard Morrison, who did an experiment on the Super Loo's acoustics.
Though he was suggested the idea to write a tell-all about his experience in the public toilet business which "had its share of moments", he blatantly refused and even scoffed at the idea. Even though Super Loo would be clearly missed by its patrons in Cambridge, they must not worry for the report also said, "The council said it would leave two toilets at the Super Loo open, at no charge, 24-hours a day and there were other public toilets in town people could use."
The council also announced that, "the remaining two toilets at the Super Loo would be serviced along with the other free public toilets in town while it mulls over the next steps including potential uses for the Super Loo building," which they announced in a statement.
