The official website of "Tamagotchi" revealed on Tuesday that there will be an upcoming film to be released alongside the anime film entitled "Kami-sama Minarai: Himitsu no Cocotama" or "God Apprentices: Secretive Cocotama" in English. It's a short film that will be called as "Eiga Tamagotchi: Himitsu no Otadake Daisakusen (Tamagotchi the Movie: Great Secret Delivery Strategy)." Also, it will be the first movie for "Tamagotchi" after nine years.
Both films will air in theaters during Japan's Golden Week that will take place from late April to early May. The short movie celebrates "Tamagotchi" franchise's 20th anniversary. Parents and children are expected to enjoy the film because of the nostalgic moments that will be included.
As for "Tamagotchi" and its history, Anime News Network said that it started back in 1996 when Bandai launched the "Tamagotchi" franchise. Around 40 million virtual pets were sold in the first batch. The brand was revived in 2004 and the brand was able to sell almost 38 million Tamagotchis. The 1.72 million of them were in the "Tamagotchi" iD line that was launched back in 2009. After March 2016, the franchise has sold an estimated amount of 81 million of these handheld games worldwide.
Regarding the anime series, the "Tamagotchi franchise" used the television to expand its reach.
The first two television anime series were the 1997 to 1998 "Anime TV de Hakken! Tamagotchi" and the 2007 to 2008 "Saiko! Tamagotchi." In 2009, a new "Tamagotchi" anime debuted, while "Tamagotchi! Yume Kira Dream" was released in 2012. Bandai also released "Tamagotchi! Miracle Friends" in 2013, the "Go-Go Tamagotchi!" in April 2014, and the "Tamagotchi! Tama Tomo Daishu Go!" in April 2015.
Meanwhile, Crunchyroll adds that OLM's Jouji Shimura, who previously worked on the Tamagotchi TV anime series from 2009 to 2015, is attached direct on a screenplay by Hiroshi Yamaguchi. Popular anime voice actress Rie Kugimiya, who has voiced the protagonist character Mametchi in the TV anime series, is confirmed to reprise the role.
Furthermore, the upcoming "Tamagotchi" anime film will probably be similar to the "Tamagotchi the Movie" released in 2007. Check out the video below:
