Couple Breaks World Record: Honeymoon Rowing From California To Hawaii

"The Honeymoon" is the 21 feet long by 4 feet wide two-person rowboat owned by South African couple Riaan Manser and his wife, Atty. Vasti Geldenhuys. The two are avid kayakers and have gotten married recently, but their actual honeymoon vacation isn't so similar to what couples usually do.

They rowed 2,500 miles from Monterey Harbor in San Francisco all the way to Pearl Harbor on Oahu, Hawaii, and they finished this in just 39 days, breaking the previous record of 45 days, according to The South African.

In the past, the two have had other achievements. According to National Geographic, Riaan had become the first person to circumnavigate Iceland and Magagascar by rowing in a kayak, and the continent of Africa by bike, without assistance. In 2014, the pair also took a six-month journey rowing 7,000 miles traveling from New York City to Morocco. This feat made Vasti the first woman to have rowed from Africa to North America.

Despite their courage and strength, many dangers have faced the two during their adventure, with an instance where Riaan was swept away by the current, in an area thousands of miles from the nearest rescue team. On another occasion, Vasti's eye went temporarily blind, damaged by the ocean's strong glare.

In addition, the two have had arguments on board, Vasti even says, "we had a fight and didn't speak for two days." Difficult when you're stuck with just one person within a 1,000 mile radius.

Despite the difficulties, the pair decided to row to their Hawaii honeymoon vacation because of the achievement factor, something that they impress their children with one day. In addition, they want to celebrate the opportunity that has been given to them to undertake such a daring task.

Vasti even says that she cried after finishing the New York to Morocco trip, not because she was scared but because she was so happy to have experienced the whole thing with Riaan.
