Time to pack those bags and map out the itineraries--Lonely Planet has recently released its annual Best in Travel lists for 2017, highlighting must-visit destinations and must-do activities this coming year.
One of the lists is Best in Value, which features destinations for budget-conscious travelers.
Nepal, which is still recovering from the deadly 2015 earthquakes, made it to this year's list. Lonely Planet estimated that a budget of around US$50 would be enough to enjoy the country's beautiful trekking routes and wildlife, and travelling there now would help the Nepali communities recover from the devastations. Whether you plan to taking it easy at Kathmandu or hiking the Annapurna circuit, this place would definitely give an experience you'll never forget.
"Landmark temples crumbled, but others came through with just the odd tile out of place, and whole swathes of the country escaped serious damage, including most of the popular trekking trails," said Lonely Planet in a separate article for the 2017 Top Countries list. "Nepal has all the skills required to repair monuments and infrastructure, but what it does need is income. By visiting Nepal now and supporting local culture and people, you could help a nation rebuild and bounce back even stronger."
Namibia's dollar has been diminishing in value in the past few years, and the guidebook says that it is now an excellent time to see and experience the country's rich wilderness and the awe-inspiring blue skies and starry nights.
Bustling, colorful, and history-rich Moroccan cities were also recommended. Marrakesh, Essaouira, and Tangier are not to be missed, especially now that they are more accessible with new direct flights, as well as new and renovated accommodations.
To those who want to want to head over to Europe without breaking the bank, Lonely Planet recommends the city of Porto, Portugal. In store for budget visitors in this city are cheap eats (the city's signature sandwich of Francesinha got a special mention), affordable wine tastings, and budget flights.
Other places included in the list are Venice, Italy; Debrecen, Hungary; Belize; Russia; Bellarine Peninsula, Australia; and Michigan's Upper Peninsula, United States.
