Microsoft's Surface has formally expanded their family with the new inclusion of a desktop. The company recently announced the Surface Studio during an event in New York City. Though it will be purchased this holiday, there are still two considerations to be made. First, the varying prices of the desktop which depends on hardware options - $2,999, $3,499, or $4,199. Second, it will only be available "in limited quantities" this holiday.
Preorders began last October 26 and the Studio will also be showcased in Microsoft retail stores ahead of its scheduled release.
"We totally believe that Surface changes the way you produce, the way you create, the way you learn," said Panos Panay, who leads Microsoft's devices team. "The product I'm going to show you is all of that - but it's one step further. It's going to seem familiar, but it's going to feel different."
He added that the Studio has an all-in-one form factor advertised to have the "world's thinnest LCD monitor ever built" at 12.5 millimeters. According to The Verge, "the touchscreen display is contained in a forged aluminum enclosure and measured 28 inches across. The display outputs 13.5 million pixels, which is 63 percent more than a 4K television."
"It's got the best screen in its class," Panay said.
Tech Times adds that the Surface Studio is equipped with a quad-core i7 processor, a NVIDIA 980M GPU, 2 TB hard drive and 32 GB of RAM. It also has four USB 3.0 ports, with slots for a SD card, Mini DisplayPort, audio and Ethernet cables.
Besides the 2.1 sound speakers in the front of the display, the PC also has a microphone that enables consumers to use Cortana from across the room to increase their productivity.
The main selling point of this new PC is its ability to become a workspace for creatives. The Surface Studio features a hinge that can folded down nearly flat with a push. It also has the ability to transform into a large tablet, becoming a virtual piece of paper or creative space. The features are indeed ideal for artists, designers, architects and the like.
