Top Five Scariest Halloween Hangouts : American Haunted Houses And Asylums

Halloween is fast approaching, and for those too old for plain old "Trick or Treat", Halloween brings more excitement and delight with old haunted houses and asylums, designed to up the paranormal activity. Here are the five scariest ones in America.

1. Terror on the Fox, Wisconsin

This attraction has been scaring people for 20 years now, and this year will feature fresh blood banks on the Fox River, as well as an array of clowns and catacombs. Popular areas in Terror on the Fox include the Laughterhouse and The Deadman.

2. Brighton Asylum, New Jersey

This place actually has a historical record of paranormal activity and was closed in the 1940s when staff started disappearing in this asylum for the mentally unstable and psychologically damaged. In addition, there were allegations of harsh living conditions, with residents near the area complaining of nightly screams, and even gross medical experiments.

Morning News USA says the medical staff themselves were driven to insanity and were said to have been "clawing their own skin off, pulling their teeth out, cutting their eyelids off, and performing surgeries on themselves and each other."

3. Statesville Haunted Prison, Illinois

This haunted prison challenges guests to go through 23 maximum security cells where they can get up close and personal with over 100 criminals "too evil to die", and are based on real life stories. After that, guests are led through the "City of the Dead" which features physical obstacles like caves and mine shafts where guests will have to escape from zombies.

4. Creep, Los Angeles

This new concept of haunted house is inspired by Erebus Burwyck, fictional 1970s artist and outcast who one said, "I don't live in darkness; darkness lives in me" TimeOut says that the concept of this place plays not on how scary monsters are, but how twisted regular humans can be. Dark true to life stories are featured in this 45-minute interactive adventure.

5. Terror Behind the Walls, Philadelphia

This attraction is also based on a haunted prison house on the Eastern State Penitentiary. This attraction boasts high quality special effects and animatronics. Hired actors are bedecked with top of the line props and makeup while the digital and lighting effects make this all too real.

The best part is the "Machine Shop" which features "one-on-one" experiences with prisoners, are guests are led individually into cellblocks.
