Spoiler Alert! Logan Director Reveals Where Wolverine 3 Takes Place In X-Men Timeline

The trailer for 20th Century Fox's upcoming Wolverine film has been released. The film titled as "Logan" (Wolverine 3) will be directed by James Mangold.

Those who have watched the trailer are somehow confused as to where the movie fits into the overall X-Men timeline.

Comic Book reveals that Logan takes place in a near future (2024) where "mutant births have drastically decreased and the world is less friendly to them. The X-Men are seemingly no more, and Wolverine (now Logan) is aging and seeing the potency of powers decrease in kind."

"He lives with the mutant Caliban, caring for an aging Charles Xavier, who is suffering from cognitive disorder (Alzheimer's?). A company called Transigen is converting mutant children into weapons, and one of those kids crosses paths with Logan: a child with two Wolverine-like claws protruding from each hand."

Regarding Logan's place in the greater X-Men story, Mangold said, "We are in the future, we have passed the point of the epilogue of Days of Future Past."

According to IGN, "the aged and weathered state of Professor X, as well as a scarred and older Wolverine, makes it clear several years have passed since we last saw Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman's characters."

This is an opportunity for Mangold to address "the questions of ageing, of loneliness, of where I belong. Am I still useful to the world?"

The director further noted that the characters of Logan will find themselves in "circumstances that are a little more real. In addition, "unlike the previous X-Men films which focused on 'saving the universe', this latest X-Men movie will take a look at what happens when you're in retirement and that career is over."

Likewise, Logan will talk about something that hasn't yet been addressed in the X-Men film universe: "the idea of mutants when they're no longer useful to the world, or even sure if they can do what they used to do," when their abilities eventually fade because of their aging body.

Logan debuts in theaters on March 3, 2017.
