Hotels.com's recently conducted national survey which revealed the top traits that Americans want and do not want in a travel mate to have a memorable holiday.
The poll also investigated additional elements essential to a perfect holiday retreat, including the most popular destinations that vacation-goers would choose to visit.
Not only this, the poll also questioned respondents about which celebrities they most wanted to share a room with, and which ones they would rather give a miss.
"Americans have spoken, and according to our survey findings, travelers are looking for smart, funny, like-minded individuals to enjoy their wanderlust journeys with," said Taylor L. Cole, director of public relations and social media for Hotels.com in North America. "Hotels.com is perpetually fueled by the idea of 'what drives you to travel,' whether it be cuisine, adventure, shopping or art. This survey is an interesting extension of this endeavor because it takes a closer look at the question of 'who drives you to travel.'"
The musts in a hotel room mate according to the survey, whether men or women are:
- Sense of humor
- Trustworthiness
- Similar lifestyle values
- Hygiene
- Intelligence
Among the above mentioned characteristics women chose trustworthiness as the most important trait while for men rank one went to sense of humor.
When it came to characteristics travelers least preferred in someone that they would share a hotel room with, a smoker was the undisputed winner followed by selfish nature, sexy accent and same religion.
However for many men and women, a person with love for cats also got a thumps down.
Best roommate hunt
Of the over 1,500 hotel-goers who took part in our survey, 18 percent of them voted First Lady Michelle Obama to be the most desired celebrity Americans would most want to share a room with on vacation.
However for the younger crowd from 18 to 29 yrs old, Will Ferrell took the number one spot, followed by Beyonce. Michelle Obama tied for third position with Natalie Portman and David Beckham.
The leading lady with the top vote from male respondents was Natalie Portman, who received 19 percent of the vote. Marilyn Monroe was another favorite among the guys, coming in a close second with 18.7 percent of the votes.
Lady Gaga loses out on popularity
One interesting finding from the survey is that, with 24 percent of the overall response count, Lady Gaga was voted the most undesirable travel mate by all age groups. Other non preferred figures included Ryan Seacrest and Spiderman.
Rome tops favorite destination list
Across all genders and age groups, Rome, Italy was the most desired tourist destination. The only group that diverged from this conclusion was the 18-29 year-old age section, who favored the hip and happening Las Vegas over Rome.
Rome received 22 percent of the overall vote, while the second most popular choice overall was Paris, receiving 14 percent of the votes. Las Vegas earned the third position overall with 13.5 percent of the total vote count.
