Majority of U.S. Travelers Try To Stay Healthy on Vacation

Travelers like to stay healthy on the road through healthy eating and exercise, a study shows.

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site found that many travelers try to keep fit according to their health and fitness on vacation survey of more than 1,400 U.S. travelers. They found that 69 percent of travelers find eating healthy to be important while traveling for leisure. Fifty-three percent said they always or often exercise when traveling.

"While most Americans will spend at least some of their vacation relaxing, many now balance their fun with fitness, as TripAdvisor's survey shows that a significant number of travelers also prioritize personal health on their trips," said Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor in a press release.

While traveling, there are several activities that people do to keep fit. From the survey, 87 percent said they walk, 46 percent said they swim, 35 percent hike, 23 percent hit the gym and use cardio machines, and 16 percent use biking as their go to physical activity on vacation.

Travelers also have favorite spots to get in a workout. Fifty-two percent said they go to the hotel gym, 42 percent hit the pool, 38 percent exercise on the beach, 27 percent do workouts in the privacy of their hotel room and nine percent find time to work out on the plane.

The survey also asked people about training while traveling. Of those that engage in exercise on vacation, 31 percent said they're motivated to keep up with their fitness routines. Twenty-eight percent exercise to avoid gaining weight on vacation and 14 percent work out just because they have the extra time to do so during vacation.

Healthy travelers come prepared. Thirty-three percent of travelers said they bring workout clothes. However, 27 percent said they never actually wear it and 26 percent said they rarely so. The survey also found that 12 percent of people take vacations just to improve their health and more plan to do so.

The survey also found that people have certain healthy eating habits while on the road. A majority, of 66 percent of respondents said they often eat healthily on vacation, while nine percent said they always do when traveling. Fifty-eight prepare to eat healthy by packing healthy foods before their trips. A majority of people (62%) order healthy items while eating out, but 37 percent store wholesome foods in their hotel room fridge.

While people try to stay healthy on trips, temptations tend to arise. In order to put off weight gain during a trip, 36 percent of people diet prior to traveling and 33 percent started dieting after a trip as 29 percent said they always or often wind up gaining weight on vacation. Sixty-five percent give in to delicious foods on vacation, while 49 percent tend to overindulge in alcohol. Despite overindulging, 81 percent of people don't feel guilty about slipping up during vacations.

Eating healthily and exercising isn't the only part of staying healthy on vacation. Sun safety is also very important, according to 87 percent of respondents. The survey shows that one in five travelers sunbathe on vacation. In order to protect themselves, 60 percent of people always wear sunscreen while 28 percent often do. However some people avoid the sun altogether as 30 percent rarely sunbathe and 24 percent never do. Of those that do sunbathe, 85 percent said they rarely or never get sunburned.

Travelers today offers several tips on how to enjoy sun safely.
